Opening the electric window blinds in my room at Hotel Metropole Suisse, I had beautiful views of Lake Como and the Funicular. The 4-star hotel stands in the perfect lakefront location in the heart of the city of Como, Italy. Established in 1892, Hotel Metropole Suisse has been enjoyed by royalty and many famous personalities.
The History of Hotel Metropole Suisse
The lower façade of the hotel, which has been recently renovated, was designed by Architect Terragni, a famous rationalist. One of the main squares in the city, looking onto the scenic lake is directly in front of the hotel.
Generations of businessmen and tourists have stayed at Hotel Metropole Suisse, which has been in the Cassani family since 1892. Four generations have welcomed guests here for 125 years. After World War II, famous guests at the hotel include Italian movie and TV stars, The Royal Family of Denmark, Princess Furstenberg, and King Faruk.
The City of Como, Italy
Hotel Metropole Suisse is a Lake Como luxury hotel that sits in the heart of the city of Como, across one street from the lake. With easy access and situated between the city of Milan and the Switzerland border, it is an ideal location for locals and tourists who want to visit northern Italy. The train station is a short five-minute walk from the hotel and ferries are across the street making this hotel one of the best places to stay in Lake Como.
Como is a very cultural and historic city. Walk through the old city’s cobblestone streets to discover numerous symbolic buildings including the beautiful Cathedral San Fedele, Villa Olmo, and Tempio Voltaino. Stroll through the famous Palazzo Terragni and along the lakefront. If time allows, take a boat trip and enjoy the stunning views of the area or hop on the funicular and visit Brunate. Numerous outdoor activities are also available including windsurfing, water skiing, hiking, and golfing.
Close to the hotel in Como is the cozy il Ducato Restaurant, where you can dine in or get some great things to go. If you decide to eat in, reservations are strongly encouraged. Also, within about a ten-minute walk is the delicious Breeze Inn Restaurant. It was my favorite when I was there, and with a new menu every month it is always fresh. Reservations are strongly recommended.
The Various Hotel Metropole Suisse Rooms
The Hotel Metropole Suisse contains three suites and sixty-nine rooms, totaling one hundred twenty-eight beds. All the rooms are individually decorated in various colors and styles. They are furnished with a minibar, safe, Wi-Fi, and an LED TV. Room service and complimentary newspapers are also available.
Some of the classic rooms are interior and are perfect for those who want a peaceful sleep and may want to sleep late. Others have views of the lake and the square, where the first rays of the sun will greet you in the morning. Some of the large superior rooms have a veranda or balcony offering exceptional views of the lake.
For families the suites are ideal, they accommodate up to five people. Suites have a living room area and a double bedroom. Some of the suites have a veranda that overlooks the lake, and all of them are very well equipped.
The Imbaracadero Restaurant
The restaurant in the hotel, Imbaracadero, serves the breakfast included with your stay. The buffet-style breakfast consists of a large selection of bread and pastries. Scrambled eggs and bacon are the only hot items. Fruit, cheeses, yogurt, and a few sliced meat items are also available. Beverages include bottled water, two types of juice, coffee, and a selection of tea. Breakfast is available from 7 -10:30 am.
Imbarcadero Restaurant, like the hotel, was founded in 1892. The restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner to hotel guests and visitors in the area. Here you can enjoy the warm and cozy inside during the chilly winter months or the lovely patio and views of the lake and mountains in the summer months.
The restaurant underwent a massive renovation in 2009 with new management. However, still in possession of the restaurant is the golden silverware designed for the first visit of the King of Denmark. It also still possesses the menu of the lunch organized in 1923 for the Prince of Piemonte.
